“Rohini, what are you thinking? Get down!”

At Bhavatosh Babu’s words, Rohini’s drowsiness broke. Shaking her head, she held the handle of the cart and got down. After paying the fare, the two of them started walking. After about ten minutes, Bhavatosh Babu stopped at the college administrator’s desk while Rohini went to the admission counter. Once the documents were submitted, she came back to Bhavatosh Babu.

“Is the work done?”

“Yes, it’s done. And they said they have allotted Hostel No. 12 for me.”

“Hostel No. 12?”

“Yes, they said it’s nearby. Let’s go.”

“Which way?” asked he, wiping the sweat from his forehead.

“There was a board at the main entrance. Didn’tyou see? Anyway, forget it. This way—we have to go,” Rohini said, pointing to the right.

“Did you bring water?”

“Yes, of course I did. You know me—I just can’t drink outside water. That’s why Mother gave me three bottles before I left. Here, take this,” she said, laughing lightly as she handed a bottle to Bhavatosh Babu.

It was almost noon. While walking, Rohini suddenly stopped. Looking at the time on her watch, she scrunched up her face in annoyance.

“Oh God, even after walking half an hour we still couldn’t find Hostel 12! What should we do now?”

“Any problem, Uncle?” a young man came up to them and asked.

“Problem? Even if I did have a problem, why should  I tell you? Tell me that.”

“My question wasn’t for you, I was asking Uncle. So keep quiet!”

“How dare you speak like that…”

“Ahh Rohini, can’t you just stay quiet for a bit? It’s true we’re in trouble. He’s come on his own to help us, and here you are arguing with him!” Bhavatosh Babu said, and fell silent.

“Uncle, what’s the problem? Please tell me,” the young man asked.

“Yes, son, actually we can’t find Hostel 12. Could you please show us the way?”

“Come, I’ll show you myself,” the young man said, taking Bhavatosh Babu by the hand and leading the way.

“Do you need a special invitation or what?” he called out when Rohini didn’t move.

Pouting, Rohini began to walk again. Under her breath, she muttered, “So, God gave him eyes in the back of his head too? How else did he know I was standing still!”

The three of them finally reached Hostel 12.

“Well, Uncle, I’ve shown you the hostel. You understand I can’t go inside. Please take my number—if there’s any problem, just call me.”

“Thank you, son. You wasted your time walking all this way with us. Still, you didn’t tell us your name!”

“Imon. My name is Imon Singh Roy.”

“All right, Uncle, I’ve shown you the hostel. You understand I’m not allowed to go inside.”

“Why, what did you do that they’ve imposed such a restriction on you?” Rohini said, her expression changing. But she spoke so softly that Imon couldn’t possibly hear.

“Did you say something?” Imon paused and turned his gaze toward Rohini.

“Did you hear anything?” Startled by his question, Rohini quickly composed herself and spoke normally.

Shaking his head, Imon turned back to Bhavatosh Babu and said:

“Please keep my phone number. If there’s any difficulty, don’t hesitate to call me. I won’t mind.”

“Rohini, take Imon’s number. You tell him, son.”

“My… my phone, Baba… the charge is finished. It’s not switching on at all,” Rohini blurted out instantly exactly as though she had prepared the excuse beforehand.

Bhavatosh Babu knew perfectly well that Rohini’s answer was a lie. So he shot her a stern glance once, then looked away.

Seeing his expression, Imon understood everything. To ease the tension, he put on a faint, fake smile and said:

“I’ll be going now, Uncle. I have some urgent work. You two carry on.”

“Well then, off you go,” Bhavatosh Babu said, watching him leave. Rohini nodded in agreement, and the two of them stepped inside Hostel No. 12 through the entrance gate.

Kalpataru Women’s Hostel, painted white, was surrounded on all sides by an abundance of trees. Through the gaps in the foliage, slivers of sunlight fell across Rohini’s face. The sight brought a gentle smile to her lips.

“Don’t just stand in the middle of the road. Finish your work quickly. As the day goes on, more and more people will start arriving. So please cooperate!” announced one of the hostel committee members.

After another round of documentation, Rohini and her father were seated in a room. About half an hour passed as they waited. Bored, Rohini let out a groan of irritation. Suddenly, her eyes drifted to the doorway. A girl was standing there holding some papers, an identity card hanging around her neck.

“This girl must be in charge of today’s hostel room allotment. Better ask her,” thought Rohini. She got up and called the girl.

“What is it? Why are you calling me? For what reason? Looking at you, I don’t think I know you!” The girl’s words left Rohini stunned.

“No, no, sister…”

“What nonsense! Did you just call me sister? Why? In what lifetime am I your sister, huh!!!” Rohini began to tremble with fear.

The girl’s shouting drew two more girls into the room. Everyone else fell silent and turned their attention toward them.

“What’s the matter, Pritisha? Why are you getting so hyper? Calm down.”

“Calm down, my foot! Do you know, Riti, this newcomer first dares to call me sister, and then insults me! It’s been three years—until today not a single person in this hostel has spoken to me that way. Even the madam talks to me with respect. And this one! I just can’t tolerate her!!”
